Isn't it always the same group of students who get involved in everything?
It seems that some young people are more encouraged and willing to speak than others, and these are usually the students who are most successful anyway.
Student voice is about ensuring that all students are involved. Those who need more support are usually less willing to speak or are unable to speak to the people who have the power to make changes. The promotion of student voice means the deliberate inclusion of all perspectives and all groups from Kindergarten to Year 12 so as to identify how some students are marginalised, excluded and bullied. Schools are most improved by listening to the experiences of students who are somehow disengaged and struggling.
Student voice has advantages for all students:
- developing an understanding of yourself as well as skills for positive, socially responsible participation
- developing an appreciation of difference and a critical view of ideas about what is normal or desirable
- developing skills which enhance the quality of your relationships with others
- fostering a greater connection to caring adults and to teachers in general
- having a say in decisions about your own learning
- participating in a program of learning relevant to your needs and aspirations
- participating in all aspects of school life as an equal
- knowing and understanding your school’s organisation and contributing to decision making in the school
- feeling inspired and strengthened for the challenge of leading and making change.
How are we supposed to learn how to be responsible if we are never given any responsibility?
