What are bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence?
Carers
Q. What are the signs that tell me my child is being bullied?
A. Look for signs such as:
- fear of going to school
- lack of friends
- missing belongings
- torn clothing
- increased fearfulness and anxiety.
You can find out a lot by taking an interest in what your child does at school. Talk about their day. Let them know you are interested by asking questions about what was good at school today, what could have been better? Don't accept 'Aww nothing'.
Q. Is bullying abuse?
A. Although bullying and harassment may be
legal or illegal, these behaviours share characteristics in common with types
of abuse, for example, bullying and, often, harassment, prolonged and repetitive.
The person being victimised is isolated from support because they feel powerless
to seek help and the oppressing behaviour can be subtly endorsed by the unspoken
consent of peers, adults and the community.
