National Safe Schools Framework(NSSF) Project
The National Safe Schools Framework
Bullying, harassment, violence, child abuse and neglect are issues of great concern to school communities across the country.
The National Safe Schools Framework (NSSF) provides an agreed national approach to assist schools to promote safe school environments and promote the wellbeing of their students. The Framework was endorsed by the Ministerial Council for Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) in July 2003, and distributed as part of an NSSF resources folder to schools across the country.
All Australian schools were required to implement the Framework in 2005, and to report on this from 2006. Reporting will be descriptive, through a short survey developed by MCEETYA for publication in the annual National Report on Schooling in Australia - the ANR.
The APAPDC National Safe Schools Framework project
The materials in this section were developed by the Australian Principals Associations Professional Development Council (APAPDC) to assist schools with limited systemic support to implement the NSSF during 2004.
Funding for the project was provided by the Commonwealth Department of Education Science and Training.
The project materials continue to be relevant to the implementation of the NSSF.
For further information, please contact the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) in Canberra, or your school system/sector.
NewsDon't forget that you can download our Powerpoint and Workbook (see links to the right). Both of these have been updated to incorporate the Health Promoting Schools Model that many schools are already familiar with, and adapt this to the NSSF. You will find this diagram on page 12 of the Workbook. This way of looking at it is very helpful for taking a whole school approach to the NSSF. The Powerpoint provides an animated version of this approach. You are free to use both. Many schools have involved all their staffs in the mapping process, by using the following simple process. Each of the outcomes statements (see link to the right) are written at the top of a large piece of butcher's paper, and displayed in the staff room. The group responsible for the NSSF writes under each statement the legal, systemic and organisational requirements that are relevant to that statement. Staff members are then given the opportunity over the following week or two to add to the list from their professional perspectives and experiences. This ensures that the school has an accurate and very comprehensive map of what is already in place. Most people are very pleasantly surprised when they see the extent to which the school already implements the NSSF. |
