Bullying issues at a boys' secondary college

Year 8 students at a city boys' college talk about issues of bullying and harassment and how their school helps overcome these issues.

Ben: I think bullying is very bad. Currently bullying takes place in non-noticeable areas. Not many people know it is happening. It's very subtle.

Peter: There is quite a lot of bullying, such as when one popular person does not like someone and a whole load of other people tag along as well.

Robert: From my experience, this school is a safe and supporting school. This is because there are many tools used to combat harassment.

Mark: I do not believe there is much bullying in this school, but there is some. This is a safe place to be because there is always a teacher to talk to about your problems.

Phil: When I was harassed I had an awful time. It was the worst time of my life at this school. When it was being sorted out it was done very well and very quickly. I think it is from all the older upper class students being power-trippers.

Graham: Two boys who are friends of a friend of mine keep calling me 'ugly', and I've told them to stop but they continue. Whenever I see them I get a chill running down my back.

Ivor: I think it is an issue that can never be fully resolved; there will always be someone who bullies and there needs to be a way of handling it. Most of the time, people hide this and therefore allow themselves to be bullied. People need to understand that it is necessary to tell other people.
