Positive friendships and wellbeing

At our primary school we have approximately 450 terrific students. We are situated on the Mornington Peninsula and our students enjoy a great beach life and supportive community.

Where It Began... We have been working on wellbeing for many years and continually evaluate our practice.

Getting Started... We have always addressed welfare issues in our school. We are addressing whole school wellbeing more thoroughly. The programs we have implemented have been successful in increasing students' connectedness to school, self awareness and personal values.

How We Went About It... Many changes have taken place over the last few years at our school.
* We have recently reviewed our student leadership roles and we have begun a new leadership program this year. This program focuses on working together as part of a team, to contribute something to our school to make it a better place.
* We have also developed a wonderful lunchtime activities program that includes community volunteers and teachers. We use 3 different recognition tickets and we award prizes for these at assembly.
* Our Student Representative Council now works as an action group. All students in every grade have specific lessons related to building confidence, resilience and bullying prevention strategies.
* Every classroom uses the same discipline and recognition charts to promote positive behaviours.
* Our lunchtime traditional detention has changed to a social learning class where students learn strategies and skills for better play and management of their behaviour. There are peer mediators in the yard daily.
* We have designated zones for specific age groups including a peace garden where prep to grade 2 students can play with toys, puppets, read books, play board games and dig in the sand pit.

What We Are Learning... We are learning that students are the greatest role models for each other and are beginning to become more and more confident and capable when interacting together. We collect student data on playground and classroom misbehaviour. We collect data on student wellbeing and connectedness to school. Students complete anti-bullying surveys which show a decrease in bullying incidents and an increase in asking for help with a bullying problem. We are continually looking for good data collection sources to track our student wellbeing and are looking at developing a computer based wellbeing whole school survey.

What's Next... We are continuing to monitor and evaluate these programs regularly and look forward to seeing continued happiness amongst all our students.
