Including parents & carers
Parents and carers have a primary role in teaching children the values, skills and behaviours that counteract bullying. Therefore it is important to include parents and carers in bullying prevention, whether through a formal role in the development of a school plan or informal sharing of information and strategies.
A few of the ways to include parents:
- Survey parents regarding their concerns about bullying issues and their ideas for preventing bullying
- Encourage parents to participate in planning committees for developing bullying-prevention initiatives
- Communicate the school's plan for creating a safe and supportive environment to all parents
- Communicate the school's procedure for informing parents when their children are involved in a bullying incident or when their children report that bullying has occurred
- Provide parents with resources to help them recognise and prevent bullying. The more the better, for example, newsletter articles, parent-teacher conferences, guest speaker dinner, workshops/seminars, P&C, mail, email, school website, tip sheets
