Using the Junior Chill Out activities
The Junior Chill out activities may be used with individuals, small groups or with the whole class to generate discussion and reflection among younger children. The example below uses the Junior Chill Out T shirt challenge as a starting point.
Using the T shirt challenge
(A lighthearted 20 minute, whole class lesson idea for under 8's)
Aim: To explore concepts of self respect and respect for others
Stimulus: Students drag & drop T shirts and other items of clothing to dress EG. The garments are decorated with words or symbols that express attitudes and symbolise concepts.
Equipment: A smartboard or a data projector linked to a computer connected to the internet.
Before the lesson
Allow students time to play with EG's T shirt challenge on the Junior Chill Out page. Students may need to practice dragging the clothes to fit EG. (Drag item just below target & it will click into place when let go). The Fishing Challenge & The Colouring Challenge can also assist in introducing students to the words: 'Respect Others' & 'Respect Yourself.
- Teacher sets the data projector to open at the T shirt challenge. (Use the zoom button on the screen for a larger version at http://www.bullyingnoway.com.au/chilloutjunior/challenges/
wardrobelarge.htm) - Students take turns to dress EG, projecting their choices for the class to see.
- Teacher encourages children to talk about their choices, and about how certain words/designs might show self-respect or respect for others. For example:
- A Teacher pointing at the ‘I’m not wearing it ’ T shirt might ask: “How does this outfit show self respect?’ which may open up into a discussion about assertion.
- A student might choose "It's OK to be different' T shirt and suggest, in his/her own words, that respect means accepting differences.
- A student might say that dressing the poor emu at all shows disrespect of animals.
- Students who miss out on turn get to vote for an outfit and say why.
Follow up activities
Students reflect on the lesson by colouring activities giving the teacher a chance to chat to individuals and smaller groups about their ideas.
- Click the icons below to open black and white line masters in PDF form for photocopying.
- A: Students decorate EG's T shirt with colours, stickers, glitter or other available materials. (A teacher might write up words during a class brainstorming session so that students learning to write could choose one to add to EG's T shirt)
- B: Students trace EG's real name and colour outfits for EG and friend.
