Teaching ideas
There are many ways we can support children to understand, cope with and change bullying behaviours through curriculum activities which foster personal development and social awareness.
The Junior Chill Out activities are designed especially for under 8s and have separate icon-based navigation. Fun activities based on the character of EG can be used by teachers on an individual or whole class basis to aid conversations with young learners about 'respect'.
Why start early
Research indicates that the early years of life are a crucial time for the development of an individual’s health and wellbeing.
This means we must learn how to address problem behaviours such as bullying as early in a young person’s life as possible, to reduce the
risk of long-term damage. A child who has been the victim of
bullying can experience problems with their physical and
psychological health, educational attainment and social
development. Of equal concern, a child who bullies
another child is at risk of becoming involved
in
criminal or anti-social behaviour later in life.
The Australian Early Childhood Association...calls on all adults who work with and care for young children to challenge the wider societal issues that impact on children’s actions. They argue strongly for early
childhood settings to develop policies and procedures for
dealing with bullying that occurs within them.
